A Soggy May Closes Out a Warm Spring
A record- to near record-wet May overpowered March and April to make the spring season wetter than normal for many parts of the Northeast. A cool end to May couldn't compete with warm weather during the rest of the season, with this spring being one of the 20 warmest on record for much of the region. This warmth contributed to below-normal spring snowfall for almost the entire Northeast.

Drought Continues to Ease
Drought and abnormal dryness continued to ease across the Northeast this week as many areas saw over an inch of rain. For instance, severe drought was wiped from the Northeast and West Virginia became drought free for the first time since June 2024. However, there are still some lingering long-term precipitation deficits for parts of the region, which can be seen in the NRCC’s monthly maps and on the Northeast DEWS Dashboard (click on Pennsylvania in the top left map to see the full Northeast region).
- The Northeast became free of severe (D2) drought for the first time since June 2024.
- Moderate (D1) drought was confined to only two small areas in the Northeast.
- West Virginia became drought free for the first time since June 2024.
- Abnormal dryness (D0) shrank in coverage across the Mid-Atlantic, with Delaware becoming free of drought and abnormal dryness for the first time since May 2024.
- Below-normal or lower seven-day streamflow was present in spots in the region’s southeastern corner and southeastern New York.
- Record low groundwater levels were found in a few places like central Maryland and southern New Jersey.
- The outlooks for June 10-14 call for above-normal temperatures and near-normal precipitation for a large portion of the region, conditions that warrant monitoring particularly given increasing evapotranspiration rates this time of year.
